Hotties at Startup Bootcamp
Translated in english below

- “ben non, tu n’as qu’à pas raconter ta life dessus”, me renvoya-t-elle à la figure.

Sur son site, il recommande d’aller lire ce post : “How to be Insanely Productive and Still Keep Smiling“.

A typical day at Startup bootcamp starts at 8:45 with a speech by Linda Hickman, entrepreneur, mentor and educator of Entrepreneurs at the London School of Economics. She offers her experience’ s lessons of many years at Oracle.
Everything she says is theory applicable now for her audience, it is a class that gives a vision of the strategy to pursue. Without magic formula, she gives the mistakes not to make, the standard stages to launch a product, clients, and which clients must be approached first… I will primarily remember her story about the perseverance of a student she knew who knocked at the door of the hotel room of the No. 1 car manufacturer CEO to present him his idea: the car of the future. It is not so much the skills of this cheeky guy that seduced the CEO, but his will.
The message is: “Go directly contact the partner of your dreams, the “just do it “ again and again!

I have the chance to meddle in the intimate encounter between a team and Linda. The “one to one” that allows everyone to find his mentor and receive personalized advice. We enter the heart of the matter.

LH: “Have you done the working prototype?”
“Not yet, I am responsible for it and I know how I’ll do it.”
LH: “Yeah? Developers all say that at the beginning” …
LH: “In your business model, you do not include the link of the distribution, why?”
“We are going to partner with expert companies for that”
LH: “This is your first priority.”
LH:” What numbers prove the existence of a market?”
“Well, it’s actually very difficult to find accurate ones, do you know where we could find some?”
LH:” Ok, then you can contact on my behalf… “

Here you go, 100 hours won on searching for mysterious studies.

I then have lunch next to a member of the Startup Local Measures, Arturas. Local Measures is a social platform for targeted advertising. “We help to improve the impact of your advertising by creating social profiles to your visitors.”
Another one who wants to reinvent Facebook? No, not at all, he understood how to reuse all of our avatars, be it Facebook, Twitter or our blogs, to analyze patterns of visitors to commercial sites and use them to make them more relevant advertisements. I asked him if the rules that govern the rights over the data of our avatars are not an obstacle for him :
“There are a lot of unexploited data, without having to go into private profiles !”, he said to me.

It reminds me of the time when, systematically seeing an ad for cat adoption on my Facebook page; I did not understand yet; I ask a friend :
- “Frankly, pet shops have so much money that they can advertise on Facebook?”
Before she answered:
-”It’s cats for you, boots for me.”
-”Ah, ok, Facebook enters our subconscious, so…”
She dismissed me with:
-” Pff, you should just stop telling your life on it.”

Anyway, the startupers go back to work.

At 4pm, I got up to leave; Alex, the organizer of Startup Bootcamp, call me back:
- “Alice, do not go now, there are two young serial entrepreneurs who are arriving, 22 and 25 years old. ”
- “Ah I do not want to miss this!”

Here they are, young, confident, winner or hot! –As another would say.
Michael Bodekær Jensen and Niklas Stephenson, be-ca-re-ful.

Michael, the eldest, 25 years old, has co-founded just eight startups, the first 12 years ago, at 13 years old. On his website, he recommends reading this post: “How to be insanely productive and still keep smiling”. To look at him, we understand.
From his 8 startups, two were successful, Smartlaunch and Boligplus. He begins his presentation with “funnel investors”, that is to say, the road from the idea to the fundraising, the intermediate steps being: the demo, the functional prototype, the users, the customers.
- “I see a lot of businesses that remain focused on the development of their prototype rather than go out there to find clients. You must ask yourselves every day what will attract the interest of the investor. He should find in your model all of these points of the funnel. “

At this point, Niklas Stephenson continued:
- “five days after having created a new project at the Startup Weekend of Copenhagen, I was in front of VC who wanted to invest. Why? I had a half-finished product, but the concept, the team and the rest were already in place.” He talks about Memolane, a startup launched five months ago, a fairly brilliant idea according to me, which is to memorize all the tweets, Facebook’s headlines, news, last.fm information’s and so on, on a single platform. It’s sort of the ephemeral archive of our thoughts in a pro-active way (unlike the Internet that keeps our information without our knowledge or almost).
Niklas is funny, he plays with his character of super-greedy-for-profits:
- “Wherever you go, in the street, at parties, during your shopping, you are addressing two categories of people: investors or customers. I accompanied my father who loves boats to a store specialized for sailors. Today, it is the entire chain of stores that is equipped with my Telco software.”
Beyond this “funny funny” side is above all a guy who believes in him and seized the small opportunities he has. He went to Silicon Valley with his team, with only one contact there. He “gave everything” during his pitch, a VC, there are 5 who in the day heard about his project, of these five, there’s one that will invest in one of his business, Firmafon I think.

These two boys are a real boost for the participants of Startup Bootcamp; we entered the real. All listen intently, respond, and ask questions, it smells of emulation and neurons cogitating.

I leave you with a joke: true story? Luis Riviera, one of the mentors of Startup Bootcamp said:

We asked a VC to choose which startup he will invest in among the 200 records he receives.

“I take the files, I throw them in the air.
Whichever lands open on my desk is the right one.

Why would I invest in people who have no chance?”

Manifesto 1.1

Illutron is a haven for innovative thinking between art and technology. The physical location is a rusty barge in Copenhagen Harbour.
Here submarines and space rockets are built. Scrapped industrial robots are brought back to life. Here singing plants grow and classical music plays together with electronic music.
illutron is a space for adventures and experiments. Artistic and technological frontiers are challenged. Experiments can be based on intuition instead of reason.
Here people are creators, not consumers. Here the audience are participants, not passive observers. Here anything can happen.
Creative thinking emerges from below, as long as a fertile creative environment is fostered, where small seeds can find nourishment and grow roots and flower.
Technological progress happens in dialog with the surrounding society and refers to both the past and the future. Our art is a joint creative process in a group, a dialog between the group members and with cultural undercurrents in society. Art involves the audience, they become actors in dialog with the work of art, with its story.
Illutron offers collective illusions, fascinating illustrations and blinding illuminations, embracing new inspirational stories in and about the world.
We make the works of art and source code available under Creative Commons. We encourage others to expand on our work.

Our art

* Fosters interaction with the audience
* Is a living process and not a static product
* Is based on recycled materials
* Refers to its inspiration in society
* Credits all involved (including the tea person)
* Make the works of art and ny source code available under Creative Commons.
* Encorage others to expand on the work, as long as Illutron is given credit.

This manifest may not be printed on dead trees, but must be in dialogue with the times/our time and Illutrons members. If it takes on fixed and recognisable form the project has stranded/run aground.

Johan is 19; he won’t go to college this year; he has found work as a developer. He is self-taught, he began programming on 2d life 3-4 years ago, when the phenomenon was at its peak in Denmark, large businesses that wanted to exist on the platform have used its services, he learned on the job. A year ago, he joined nine other people and set up a Hackerspace in Copenhagen: Labitat.

Meeting in the pouring rain, in front of a building that looks abandoned; he places his debit card into the homemade magnetic terminal, the door opens, we enter. I must say that the number of professional machines therein impresses me: laser cutter, 3D printer, giant printer, multitouch table … Everything looks in perfect condition. Members themselves provided these materials. Less than a year old and Labitat already has 70 members who pay 12 euros per month for full access to the site.

Intensely interested in free culture, it is evident to this young boy, the world of tomorrow will be Open Source or won’t be. Without any dogmatism, his tone is soft, his thoughts are smooth, listening to him, it just makes sense. A singer mother, experimenting avant-garde projects and a programmer stepfather were enough for Johan to become this mixture of art and technology. He is naturally attracted to artists’ projects for their environment seemingly devoid of technical constraints and in service of concept.

We leave the Hackerspace to go to another place: “Illutron“, a boat taken over by artists. Illutron and Labitat are similar in many respects; however, if Johan prefers to go to Illutron it is because artists run the space. The projects are different; they do not only explore the technology but a vision through it. At Illutron, in the middle of August, we meet Ole. From his cabin, the artist completes a piece that will be shown at Ars Electronica. Ole does not ask me where I am from or why I’m here but he tells me about his next project. With three collaborators, they will go to Greenland, a former colony of Denmark, to film the lives of its inhabitants for a year: “Today, there is no needs to be BBC to be able to do this type of expedition.” Hearing about the ice melting and the animals disappearing all the time, they wondered why no one spoke of the inhabitants.

I would like to chat with Ole and Johan for hours. I have often heard from hackers or founder of alternative places that for a place to work, it is primarily down to the own culture of the people who embody it. At Illutron, it seems to be just that. Proof with the manifest below:

Manifesto 1.1

I met Alex Farcet through Nourygat Franck, one of three permanent at the Startup Weekend held at La Cantine. On a trip to Paris, Alex only had two months left before the launch of the European’s little brother of Techstars: Startup Bootcamp. Like Y Combinator and Techstars, Startup Bootcamp is an accelerator, that is to say, an intensive development of 10 young businesses selected from hundreds that will live together for three months, surrounded by the best mentors, coaches and references in terms of “business success story”, with the objective of raising funds at the end.

It has been two years Alex dreams about it, 6 months since he started gathering the best of the business. He spoke to the founders of Techstars, for him a guarantee of legitimacy in a chilly Europe: “I sent a long mail to David Cohen of Techstars. Two months later, I received a reply. A long list of detailed process to get there. Alex then spent six weeks immersed in the U.S. accelerator before setting Startup Bootcamp, the first franchised version of Techstar in Europe.

Excited by the idea, tickets in hand, I arrived in Copenhagen. Here we are, Monday, August 16, 2010, in the local coworking space videnshuset, 10 startups have an appointment with Alex for the Startup Bootcamp. Many have left their job for the adventure of entrepreneurship, a high gamble when you know that only 10% of them will survive.
The idea, even the prototype, is already in place, a selection from more than 200 projects is a guarantee of quality. Startup Bootcamp will accelerate their life towards the worst or the best. Worst comes worst, they will fail to convince an investor, but they will have wasted less time and money than any isolated startup.
There is a first day of class’ feeling. Quiet and reserved, the participants observe each other. Soon, Alex breaks the ice, he speaks “truth”, he tells his story and how it got there, he engages his audience like a father to his children, although he also says: “I do not want to play the nanny, I do not want to be your partner, I do not want bullshit either. The success of your business will come through the success of Startup Bootcamp, you are responsible for the entire group.” The community is created; a good will is installed and each one pitches his business in 20 seconds, the constructive critics fusing.

The expression is important, the experience of some, the youth of others comes through in the pitch. A good pitch does not guarantee the soundness of a startup but it is the key that opens to listening and to the interests of others; it is via the pitch you access the most important: the human. So it is the first exercise of Startup Bootcamp. 24hrs later, it happens in front of 60 mentors! Everything goes very fast, there are only three months.
The room is full of serial-entrepreneurs, venture capitalists, coaches and gurus of technology… I observe the participants. How do they defend themselves in this jungle? Not bad at all, the rules of the game are digested, each seeking someone who would become his mentor, “let’s network!” says Alex.

They will spend three months working in the best conditions, with a progressive program in 3 parts: “shape, prototype, sell”. At the end, a meeting with more than 100 investors for the big launch, and finally, + 3.3500 euros per person against 5-10% of the capital.

You find it expensive? These businesses are very young, they are not worth much at the moment and that money is already a lot: it is what Alex calls the get you going cash, just enough to have nothing but your project in mind. Beyond the financial aspect, they will mainly benefit from intensive support from successful businessman, access to a valuable network and an unexpected spotlight on them. Money is good, smart money is better: money is not everything, having prominent, experienced persons involved in your business’ idea to take it to prosperity, that’s what is “smart money”.

Let’s stop comparing with Silicon Valley and do with our differences, that is the message from Alex and the vision we share at Silicon Sentier. As he wrote on his blog, referring to the reasons we give ourselves to justify the European slumber: “Do we have the talent? Do we have the investment dry powder? Do we have the market” and on and on(…). We’ve got a fragmented, multi-lingual market? We know how to conquer international markets from the get-go! The talent isn’t concentrated in one place? We know how to attract and (remotely) manage international talent! Our angels aren’t as active? We’re better at boostrapping! “

I am fascinated by the humility with which the character runs this heavy responsibilities’ project, but also, I firmly believe that our meeting is not coincidental. And if, rather than set up a simple incubator at La Bourse in Paris, Silicon Sentier created an intense program of acceleration? We, who have hosted the first French StartupWeekend and have understood all the benefits, we, who have then organised ArtGame Weekend from which 9 applications -3 downloadable and playable- came out, how could we have not thought of it sooner? These events are beta accelerators: emulation by the group, restrained time, the mentors’ help, the final jury, the coverage by the medias… All this multiplies the capacity of creation. Mentors, get ready and show yourselves, it will also take off in Paris…!
